'Is that Will Smith?' Chris Rock jokes after Dave Chappelle attacked

Chris Rock
sprung to Dave Chappelle's side amid an onstage incident Tuesday night.

During the Netflix Is a Joke Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Chappelle, 48, was attacked towards the end of his performance, when a man in a black hoodie rushed the stage.

The man appeared to push the comedian, knocking him to the ground. The attacker then attempted to flee, but was stopped by security guards and members of Chappelle's team.

Spokespeople from the LAPD confirm to PEOPLE that the suspect, identified as Isaiah Lee, 23, has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon. One LAPD spokesperson says the weapon was "a replica handgun with a knife," describing it as a "replica handgun-slash-knife."

Chris Rock, who performed later in the event last night and was similarly subjected to a violent outburst on stage at the Oscars in March, came on stage and joked: 'Was that Will Smith?', with Jimmy Carr standing behind

Lee is being held in Los Angeles City Jail on $30,000 bond. It was not immediately clear if he has retained a lawyer.

Along with Jamie Foxx and several others, Rock, who had performed earlier in the night, sprung into action to help Chappelle.

In a callback to his own incident at the 2022 Academy Awards in late March, Rock, 57, said, "I thought that was Will Smith!"

Chappelle had also ended his set making jokes involving Will, 53, PEOPLE can confirm.

Lee's motive for the attack remains unclear. Police have not yet established where he lives, and if he attended the show alone.

He stormed the stage while Chappelle joked that he'd had to increase his security in light of his trans jokes at the Netflix is a Joke festival. The attacker was armed with a gun that contained a hidden knife, according to the cops. It's unclear if he was searched on his way into the venue, or how he was able to gain access to the stage.

Lee was then tackled by security guards who appeared to break his arm in the melee. He is described as weighing 140lbs and is 5ft 11.

An attacker who stormed a stage and bundled Dave Chappelle to the ground in front of a shocked audience was armed with a knife stashed inside a replica gun, police have revealed.

It raises questions about security at the Netflix show, its first ever live comedy festival, which forced fans to put their phones away but failed to spot the weapon. Netflix has not yet addressed the incident.

Chris Rock later came to the stage and joked that it was Will Smith who attacked Chappelle, while Jimmy Carr stood shocked in the background at the 'crazy' gig

The venue said on its website that the show, which last night was titled Dave Chappelle and Friends, would be a 'phone-free experience' and that the audience would have to secure their phones inside pouches.

After the attacker was detained, Chappelle thanked Foxx on stage during the curtain call.

He said: 'Shout out to Jamie Foxx by the way. Whenever you're in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff's hat.'
